Significance

Home to Pura Luhur Uluwatu, one of the six key temples believed to be Bali's spiritual pillars. The raw ocean power here is intense.

History

The temple dates back to the 10th–11th century, attributed to the sage Empu Kuturan, and was later sanctified by the Hindu priest Dang Hyang Nirartha in the 16th century. It is a sea temple (penyawang) guarding Bali from evil spirits.
